For our latest ‘Meet the Team’ interview, we caught up with Toby, one of our apprentices at JAH. Toby has been with us for almost two years, so it’ll be interesting to get some insight into what he does while he’s at work, and what he does in his spare time!
What do you do at JAH?
I’m an apprentice, so I help the main electricians out, where I can try and learn as much as possible and add value to the company. I’m working towards my AM2 electrician qualification, which stands for ‘Achievement Measurement 2’; it’s a skill-based exam consisting of five test modules, tested by the National Electromechanical Training over 3 days.
How long have you been working at JAH?
I’ve been here since November 2021 so almost 2 years!
What does your typical day at JAH look like?
Busy as always! It ranges. I’ve been involved in commercial, domestic, and industrial work. Its good because I get to work on a real range of stuff.
What would you say your favourite sector to work in would be?
I do enjoy the commercial stuff, just because its clean! Sometimes the domestic work can be a bit dirty and tedious.
What is your favourite thing about working at JAH?
Probably the people! I get on really well with everyone I work with, and we always have a laugh.
What would you say to somebody looking to start work at JAH?
Don’t be afraid to come and chat! The whole team are really friendly, and it’s a really happy work environment.
What is the coolest project you have worked on?
It would have to be down in the Dockyard or at the Food Factory. The Food Factory, in particular, was really interesting because when you think of farms, you don’t think of squeaky clean, but these places were immaculate. You had to wash your hands about 3 times before entering the door! It really puts you at ease knowing where your food is coming from, and it’s a nice, clean place like that. Working in wellies and a lab coat was a bit different!
How do you think your colleagues would describe you?
Haha! I think they’d say I’m quite enjoyable to work with, and I don’t think anyone would have a bad thing to say!
If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
It has to be chicken carbonara.
What’s your favourite band?
The Courteeners – I’ve seen them a few times as well. The last time I saw them was at the 02 Academy Brixton.
Favourite Holiday Destination
Spain, Majorca, as far away from Magaluf as possible.
What’s your favourite thing about Plymouth?
The seaside. I’m really into my sea swimming so it’s perfect really.
When you’re not at work what do you like to do?
Sea swimming as I just mentioned, going to the gym, and at the moment I have caught the dreaded golf bug, but I’m not sure how long that will last.
