Take a look at our latest meet the team interview – find out how Jake’s first two and half years have been at JAH Electrical, and learn more about how he spends his time outside of work.
So, Jake, what’s your role at JAH?
I came to JAH Electrical straight from school, and I’ve really enjoyed my first two and a half years and have learnt a lot. No day is ever the same, which I like.
I’m a 3rd Year Apprentice Electrician, and I’m aiming to qualify within the next year, once I’ve sat my final exam. I attend college one day a week at The Focus Training Group in Plymouth. I am following the “Installation Electrician Apprenticeship”, which takes between 3-4 years to complete and qualify.
What are you learning at college?
We learn all about the theory associated with the electrical trade, which involves all of the calculations, and formulae, for example. We also learn all about the practical side of being an electrician. Just a few of the topics included in the Apprenticeship are:
- Design and Installation Practices
- Health, Safety and Environmental Considerations
- Fault Diagnosis and Rectifcation
- How to Plan and Oversee Electrical Work
What do you find most interesting about your role?
I like the work I do, which is very varied, and being out and about every day meeting different people is interesting. As an apprentice, I’m always partnered up with a qualified electrician. I do periods with different qualified electricians to get used to working with different people and how they work. It gives me really good practical experience.
What made you want to be an electrician?
It runs in my family, so it’s all I’ve ever really known, and I have been working in the school holidays since I was around 13. I just knew being an electrician was what I wanted to do, and by doing an electrical apprenticeship, it has taken it to another level.
What do you do outside of work/any hobbies?
Football is a main hobby of mine. I used to play when I was at school, but now I just watch. I’m a Plymouth Argyle season ticket holder and try to get to as many matches as I can with my mates – I love watching football, and Argyle are doing really well at the moment, which is a bonus!
Snowboarding is something I also really enjoy when I get to go abroad. I learnt to ski when I was 6, initially practising on the dry slopes before skiing on real snow. The first day I tried on the real snow, I broke my leg which was quite unfortunate! Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to go every year.
And now for the quick-fire round!
Are you a night owl or an early bird?
I prefer to get up early.
Cats or dogs?
Definitely dogs – we have two dogs at home.
Winter or summer holiday?
Winter every time – snowboarding! I can’t sit around doing nothing all day in the sun!
What is your greatest achievement to date?
I’ve been nominated for the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ awards by my college. I will have to do some practical assessments at an event this year before I will know if I’ve got to the next stage.
What do you want to have achieved within the next 5 years?
Well, firstly I want to have passed my apprenticeship and be a fully qualified electrician, to a high level. In the long term, I would like to go down the route of owning my own properties, with a view to make a business out of that in the future, to run alongside my electrical work.
