Cath Labs Project in Plymouth
Some members of our team at JAH Electrical Services recently worked on installing new equipment for the cath labs in Derriford hospital. A particularly important area in Derriford Hospital, the catheterization laboratory (cath lab) houses equipment which is used to examine the arteries in the body and treat patients if needed. With the continuous growth and development of technology in the health sector, the laboratory was in need of an update to ensure the equipment they had kept up with the times in surgery.
The original equipment in the cath lab was installed 18 months prior to the work we carried out this time round in 2020. The job wasn’t as straight forward as we hoped, as we were working with two different specifications, ours and the previous one installed by Philips. As Philips is a Dutch company, the European drawings and info are slightly different from what we would use here in England. Although challenging, this was a great experience for our guys in ‘translating’ for commercial jobs.
The existing installations took 1½ weeks to strip out before we could start to install the new equipment. We carried out work in the floor duct, control room and the technical room. To support all the electrical wires that will be used, we installed a 2 x 100mm cable tray containment into the ceiling. Included in this big job, we installed a new control panel, 3 rows below the desks, 9 separate trunking and dado drops, 5 of which were galvanised trunking, and 4 dado trunking drops with some help from some Philips engineers for 2 weeks. Just when the job was almost completed, the Philips engineers required them to put in new supplies to power sockets, a hard job to do at the end!
We were thrilled to sign a 5 year contract with the clinic, meaning we will carry out future static testing and repairs to the equipment if required. All in all the job was rewired, reconnected and commissioned in 6 weeks, from an old system to a brand new one.
Ray was in charge of completing this job, accompanied by 3rd year apprentice Liam, who have been working alongside each other for 2 years. Electrician Ray commented how the job was tough at times but were extremely pleased with the overall outcome and all that the pair had achieved. “There are 7 more heart clinics around the UK which we would really enjoy to work on. Jamie allows us to get on with our jobs as he trusts his electricians to complete them to a high standard. Just one of the reasons why it’s great working here at JAH”.
As usual, Jamie Hitchcock, managing director, took regular visits to the site to see how the work was progressing, “Once again, we have managed to adapt & overcome all the challenges that get in our way when we are completing these types of projects. I am very please as always with the way our team complete these installations to such a high standard. It is satisfying to get complementary feedback from our clients which makes me proud of our highly skilled engineers that are making this happen for JAH Electrical. Keep up the good work team”.
