For our latest ‘Meet the Team’ interview, we caught up with Tom Potts, a veteran member of the JAH team to find out more about his role, hobbies, interests and retirement plans!

So, Tom – what’s your role at JAH?

I’m a Contracts Manager, so I go out to do the estimating and surveying for jobs. I also work on running the jobs, to make sure they run smoothly – like a project manager.

How many years have you worked at JAH?

Around 5 years now.

Meet the Team - Tom Potts - Saltash Football Club

You’ve worked at JAH for a long time, what would you say you’re the proudest of working on?

That’s a hard one because I’m proud of everything we do! I think if I had to narrow it down, I’d say our work at Derriford Hospital in the heart unit and the outpatient’s department. I’m also quite proud of the work we did in installing new outdoor lighting at Saltash Football Club because it’s made such a difference to the team. I may be a bit biased on this one, as I’m on the committee there!

What’s your favourite thing about working at JAH?

The team, they’re brilliant! From the director down, everyone’s fantastic. We’re a sociable bunch and we even get together outside of work because we get on so well. You couldn’t ask for a better team.

What are JAH like to work for?

They’re very good, I’ve been with other companies and JAH is by far the most enjoyable workplace I’ve ever had.

You’re retiring soon, what are you going to miss the most about working at JAH?

I’ll miss the banter, the camaraderie and the team because everyone is so friendly. I think I’ll miss Holly most of all, she’s my right hand!

What would you say to anyone who was considering coming to work at JAH?

I’d tell them that JAH is a great company who look after their staff, treat them well and pay them well.

How do you think your colleagues would describe you?

Oh, I think they’d say I’m a bit of a character!

What was your first job?

I was an apprentice electrician with a local firm when I was 15. I’ve been in the electrical field ever since.

Meet the Team - Tom Potts - Coronation Street

What’s your favourite tv show?

Coronation Street, I love it!

Do you have a favourite meal? If so, what is it?

Nothing could beat my wife’s lasagne, nobody has been able to match it.

Plymouth’s a pretty interesting place, what’s your favourite thing about where we live?

Well, I live in Saltash, so I quite like looking at it from where I live!

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go?

I’ve always fancied visiting Peru and Brazil or cruising around Panama.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do?

I spend lots of time with my grandchildren and love taking them on adventures around the South West during the school holidays. I also play walking football at Plymouth Argyle and serve on the committee at Saltash Football Club.

Meet the Team - Tom Potts - Kylie Minogue

If you could choose four dream dinner party guests, who would you pick?

Kylie Minogue, she’s my favourite. Then I’d say Chris Martin from Coldplay as I like his music, Bradley Walsh because he’s funny and Rita from Coronation Street because there’s something about her that I like! I can’t cook though so we’d need to get a takeaway or a private chef to cater for us. Maybe Gino D’Acampo? I think we’d have a right party!

Finally, what are your plans for retirement?

I’m going to enjoy spending more time with my grandchildren and going on more adventures with them. I also want to devote more time to volunteering for Macmillan and the Mustard Tree Unit at Derriford Hospital, as they were a great help to me and my family after my wife passed away.

Huge thanks to Tom and a warm welcome to Rob Brown

We would also like to say a warm welcome to Rob Brown, who will be joining us on Monday 28th October as Contracts Manager. Tom will be helping Rob to settle in and will be ensuring a good handover. We would like to extend our huge thanks to Tom for everything you have done over the last 5 years, and to wish Rob a very warm welcome and every success in your new role.
