What is PAT Testing?
PAT Testing (portable appliance testing) is the phrase used to describe the inspection and examination of electrical appliances and equipment to check that they’re safe for use. Once an approved electrician has visually inspected the appliance for obvious signs of damage and wear and tear (such as a damaged flex or cracked plug) they will test the appliance for electrical defects. Once the testing has been carried out, the electrician will then affix a label to the appliance either condemning it’s use if it’s failed to meet requirements, or to indicate the appliance has passed testing and on what date. A report is also provided, detailing every appliance that’s been tested and whether they passed or failed the test.
Whilst PAT Testing is not legally required, it’s recommended for all businesses to ensure electrical risks (such as fire) are reduced and is one of the easiest way for businesses to meet their obligation to providing their workforce with safe plant and equipment.
