Why Do I Need PAT Testing Services?

If you own a business or are a landlord, you may be interested in our PAT testing services and how we can help you. PAT testing, or portable appliance testing, is the process of examining electrical equipment and appliances to check that they are safe to be used within your business or property. Any appliance that gets plugged into a wall socket should be regularly tested. It’s worth noting that although electrical appliances have been checked and tested, you can never be 100% sure that nothing will ever go wrong with them. There’s still a chance that faulty equipment will overheat and sockets could still become overloaded. As a duty of care to your employees / colleagues or tenants, it’s important to make sure that these appliances are tested thoroughly.

No legal requirement is currently in place that states this has to be done, as part of your responsibilities as a landlord or employer. However, there are regulations in place that have safety standards in place that have to be met.

These include:

Why is PAT Testing Important?

PAT testing is a good way to reduce the risk of an electrical fire and should be included as part of your fire risk and safety procedures. In this day and age, we are more at risk of our appliances being faulty, with the risk of cheaper products coming into the UK from other parts of the world. If you are a business or a landlord, it is advisable to have any new appliances PAT tested as well as ensure existing appliances are tested regularly.

Although testing could bring up faults in electrical appliances and could cost you money in the short term, the benefits far outway the chance of an electrical fire at your premises. Statistics show that approximately 33% of accidental fires in the workplace in the UK are caused by electrical appliances. Don’t forget, regular testing reduces fires. It is important to note that PAT testing will also help to reduce your insurance.

Types of Appliances

If an appliance uses a plug and socket or flexible cable, it qualifies as a portable appliance, therefore PAT testing will be required. Even though the name portable appliance testing suggests this is specifically for portable appliances, this is not the case. Fixed appliances also require PAT testing. Even though these types of equipment may not have a plug, they will still run off the main electrical supply. This could be hard-wired or integrated equipment such as towel racks or storage heaters. Other examples of portable appliances include:

  • Phones
  • Fridges/Freezers
  • Kettles
  • Microwaves
  • Toasters
  • Desktop computers
  • Phone, laptop, and tablet charges
  • Printers
  • Heaters
  • TV Screens
  • Camera Equipment
  • Vacuum Cleaners
  • Boilers
