Take a look at our latest meet the team blog and find out how fully qualified electrician, Luke Bulley’s year has been at JAH Electrical, and learn more about how he spends his time outside of work.
So, Luke, what’s your role at JAH?
I am a fully qualified electrician dealing in domestic, commercial and industrial electrical maintenance for the company, and have really settled into being part of the JAH Electrical ‘family.’ I have been with JAH for just over a year now and I can honestly say each day is certainly never dull. No day is ever the same and the work is very varied.
I worked for a few companies before joining JAH, mainly sub-contracting. I’d known Rob, the Contract Manager at JAH since I was an apprentice, so about 10 years before starting at JAH. He knew how I worked and what I was capable of, so when a position became available and I got the job, this made it easy for me to slot into the team and hit the ground running.
How long have you been an electrician?
I qualified as an electrician back in 2011, so have been a fully qualified electrician for about 11 years now. Training to be an electrician can take a few years. On average, it takes around three years to complete an apprenticeship, which typically involves four days working as an electrician and one day a week at college.
Are there any jobs which stand out, that you’ve worked on at JAH?
Whether I am working in a domestic, commercial or industrial environment, it’s always great to get experience in different sectors. I worked on a job last year for Wilsmore Physiotherapy which opened its new clinic at Langage Business Park. Our fully qualified team of electricians installed the lighting, power and fire alarm. Just an example of one project I’ve worked on.
What do you find most interesting about your role?
The job of an electrician is varied, which makes it one of the best trades to qualify for. Once qualified, you can perform maintenance work in a domestic setting or at another location, such as in a commercial or industrial environment. I get to work on some really interesting projects and meet all different types of people, which is great! Sometimes I work on my own, but on the bigger jobs there could be a group of us, which is good to bounce ideas off of each other. Fault finding can also be a big part of the day as it can sometimes take a while to get to the bottom of the issue as the wiring is hidden under floorboards and in ceiling spaces, which can be a challenge, but we always get there.
In three words, how would you sum up working for JAH?
Fun, busy and relaxed.
Did you always want to be an electrician or did you have another career path in mind?
When I left school I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. Initially, I ended up working in a petrol garage, then later on I had the opportunity to see what being a ‘sparky’ would be like. I worked on a couple of jobs, liked the trade and haven’t looked back since. The electrical trade is the place for me.
What is the best thing about working for JAH?
Even though we have an important job to do, everyone gets on. There’s never any tension between any of us and we enjoy each others’ company. As long as you’ve got a good team, you’ve got good company.
How do you think your colleagues would describe you?
A joker, a bit of a laugh and annoying.
And now for the quick-fire round!
Chinese or Indian?
Chinese all day long.
I’m old school 90s, Oasis.
Best bit of a roast dinner
A spud, if it’s cooked in duck fat.
Favourite holiday destination?
Croatia – I’ve been a few times but going again soon.
What three things are at the top of your bucket list?
It used to be skydiving, and zip-lining through the mountains but I’ve recently ticked them off the list. I suppose the next best thing would be to win the lottery.
When you’re not at work what do you like to do?
Play golf, hang out with mates, chilling. Watching football, especially following Plymouth Argyle and Liverpool.
