If you are worried about the electrics in your home, take a look at our current blog, rewiring – our guide what to expect.
As a homeowner, you want the peace of mind that the electrics in your home are safe. If you are a landlord or in rented accommodation, building regulations state electrical installations should be tested every five years. If you are a homeowner, this is required every 10 years.
Is your home is over 25 years old? Your electrics may need updating or replacing in full, so it’s best to get them checked. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) will identify any damage, deterioration, defects and/or conditions that could be potentially unsafe along with recommendations for improvements. As NICEIC domestic installers, JAH electricians have the skills, qualifications and expertise to carry out rewiring works! We are fully insured, trading standards approved and rated as one of the three best electricians in Plymouth.
Rewiring a property is not always the simplest of tasks and can often take a few days rather than hours. Here we hope that our blog, rewiring – our guide of what to expect, will prepare you for any disruption this may cause and alleviate any reservations you may have.
What we’ll do when rewiring your home
Once we have established your electrical rewiring requirements and you have decided to choose us for the rewiring project, we will take a short time to discuss the positioning and layout of your new electrical system. You can do this before we arrive but rest assured we are always on hand to help. Our experienced electricians are happy to advise on the best electrical layout for your home. The rewiring process is an undeniably messy, disruptive and invasive job. We start from the roof and work our way down, operating in a team of 2-3 fully qualified electricians.
How will we prepare to rewire your home?
There’s no fixed timescale for completing a rewire. This depends on the condition of the wiring, the size of the property and several other variables. It’s not an overnight job, so if you’re intending to remain living in your property whilst the rewiring takes place, you can expect to deal with a lot of dust and noise! We will however do our best to keep this to a minimum and will ensure we clean up every evening.
Isolating the power supply
The original electrical supply will be isolated, ensuring the old electrics are dead and safe to work on. We will then install a temporary power supply to enable our electrical team to power their tools etc.
Lifting of floorboards
Does your property have floorboards (most do)? We will lift the boards before your electrical rewire to make routes to install your new cables.
Burying the cables within the walls
Most of our clients prefer the cables to be buried within the walls. We will use a machine to cut through the brick and chip out a channel for the cables to be placed in.
Our fully experienced electricians will use their combined technical knowledge to wire the property. This is done in line with 18th edition wiring regulations. Once all of the electrical cables are installed we will begin putting your home back together. We will check that nothing has been missed and all the new cabling is perfect with no potential risk.
Electrical back boxes
Our skilled electricians will then begin to box out – this is installing galvanised boxes that come in 1 gang or 2 gang versions – this is what is put in place to enable us to screw your sockets and switches to. If you are looking for sockets and switches to match your décor, we can also assist with this. We can also supply integrated USB sockets at your request. Please contact us for further information regarding this.
Putting the property back together
We will now begin to put the property back together – starting with replacing the floorboards that have been lifted. All electrical and accessories and products will be connected onto preinstalled wiring which feeds back to the consumer unit (distribution unit).
Electrical testing will now be carried out to ensure the cables are safe to activate. Further tests will take place when the power goes on but we initially need to make sure it works properly and avoid any unforeseen faults.
Now’s time to put all of our hard work to the test and initiate the ‘power-on. Once the property is spectacularly lit up (the fun part!), our electricians will perform some standard functional tests such as switching the light switches and trying some load on the sockets.
The big tidy up
We will always at JAH Electrical Services ensure that we tidy and clean at every stage of the job – and then they will one final tidy up once the job is complete. Electrical wiring can be a very dusty process, we will therefore make sure that prior preparations are done properly to reduce mess.
Rest assured – you won’t be disappointed by the service from JAH Electrical.
